March 2011

A few years ago, quite by chance, I ran into a fellow mid-1990s-late-evening habitué of the Zone Coffee House. He remembered me photographing during those evenings, and expressed an interest in seeing a few of the pictures again. The idea of making a website for the Zone pictures came up, and after we parted the idea stayed with me. Before long all the other pictures I had taken at other times and in other places began to crowd the field. Within a short time I had formulated a general idea of what I wanted do, something I had never considered before.

I thank John J. Bukowczyk, Professor of History, Wayne State University, for his interest, support, ideas, efforts, and friendship over the past twenty-eight years. If not for him my Poletown negatives might still be stored in a cardboard box in the closet, and the Urban Interiors Project would have never happened.

I am grateful also to my brother, John Harkness, for his suggestions and proofreading; to Celina Juszczyk who taught me web construction and who has continued to solve problems along the way; to Jennifer Lengyel-Royal who supplied John Bukowczyk and me with essential background information about the Urban Interiors interviewees, people we had met over twenty years ago, including their current whereabouts; and to my wife Barbara for her patience and support. Shortcomings in photography, writing, and design are attributable only to me.
